The Wastes

Wild Surface Ecosystems & Borderland Hazards

Beyond the soft borders of the cultivated Sovereign Oases lie **The Wastes** (or **The Wastelands**). These are vast, unmanaged surface environments that have not yet been stabilized by reclamation missions. They represent the raw, untamed face of Earth’s physical recovery.

1. Environmental Conditions

The Wastelands are characterized by extreme weather patterns, unstable soil chemistry, and hazardous atmospheric pockets. Unlike the controlled circulation of the Crater Cities, storm systems here build rapidly, carrying lightning cells and sand-debris vortexes that can trap travelers on the surface.

⚠️ EXPEDITION SECURITY ALERT

Demarcation: Severe hazard. Reclaimed "living" pockets maintained by Hyōménal communities are safe for standard humans, but environmental volatility increases exponentially with the distance from these stabilized zones. Surface travel beyond designated parameters requires heavy filtration masks or surgical lung overrides.

2. Evolution of Sapient & Feral Avians

The rapid biosphere collapse and recovery between the years 2110 and 2310 triggered accelerated evolutionary adaptation among Earth's bird populations:

3. Sibling Surface Expeditions

The younger generations of the Oasis, like Kira, Jacobi, and Kalel, frequently venture deep into the Wastes. They explore abandoned old-world infrastructure, ancient ruins of forgotten cities, and craters left behind from the corporate wars. Because Nova obtained her legal lung augmentations at age 17, she is able to follow them deep into these hazardous dead zones without needing her mask, chasing their makeshift joyrides in the hotrod *The Little Guy*.
